The Society of Serbian Genealogists “Poreklo”

The Society of Serbian Genealogists “Poreklo” is a civil association from Belgrade that researches the origin of Serbian surnames, families, and in a broader sense, the origin of Serbian people. The Society was founded in 2012, and today counts more than 500 members from Serbia (for Membership see here), the Southeast Europe and the world. In the last ten years of work it has launched several projects of national importance.

On the internet the Society is present through Portal Poreklo.rs and Forum Poreklo.

The main projects of the Society are Serbian DNA project, Genealogical Digital Library, Heraldic Project Grbovnik and Catalogue of genealogical archival resources.

The Society functions through editorial boards and expert committees.

Serbian DNA project

Serbian DNA project was launched in September 2012. The project is managed by a group of editors, members of Editorial Board of Serbian DNA project.

In the last ten years, they have started the series of genetic ancestry researches: 200 Serbs (2016), Serbs of Old Herzegovina (2016), Serbs of South Serbia (2016), Serbs of Romanian Banat (2018), Upper Zeta (2019-2020), Grbalj (2020), Stara Raska and Stari Vlah (2020), Pcinja and Macedonia (2020), Gornje Polimlje (2020), Pivljani and Banjani (2020), Vrlika Region (2021), Semberija (2022), Baranja (2022), Kalnik (2023), Ozren (2023).

Currently, the best predictor of Y-DNA haplogroups in the world, NevGen.org, was developed under the auspices of the Serbian DNA project.

The work of Editorial Board of Serbian DNA project is monitored by Science Council of Serbian DNA project composed of professional biologists, ethnologists and historians.

Committee for Archivistics

The Committee for Archivistics was formed in 2017. In 2018 the committee established the Archival Catalogue which now counts more than 15.000 archival units. The main goal of this committee is to create interactive database of Serbian genealogical resources.

Committee for Digitization

It was founded in 2017 after the establishment of Digital Library Poreklo (end of 2016). In four years of work it has digitized more than 8000 books and magazines. On average, each year the committee digitize about 170.000 pages. The base of Digital Library is Poreklo’s Library with more than 12.000 books from the field of genealogy, history, ethnology, archaeology, linguistics and heraldry. In 2020 Committee formed a special Serbian Library in English. Committee also manages Library Catalogue.

Committee for Heraldry

It was founded in 2017 in parallel with the launch of Project Grbovnik. The main goals of this committee is collecting, researching and publishing of heraldic materials related to the lands where the Serbs are living or have lived in the past. First years of work have been spent on collecting the so-called Illyrian armorials (17 of 19 available) and the Lists of medieval nobility (13 of 14 available).

Poreklo Foundation (“Zadužbina Poreklo”)

Since its founding, in 2012, the Serbian Genealogical Society “Poreklo” has been using the premises of the Milutin Bojić Library as its headquarters. This prompted us, in 2019, to invite our members and friends to support the establishment of the “Poreklo” Foundation through voluntary contributions. It was necessary to raise €30,000 in initial capital, which we successfully achieved after two years of donations by our members and supporters. The “Poreklo” Foundation was officially established on October 2, 2021, and soon after we managed to purchase our own property at Požeška 118a which serves as the headquarters of bothe the Society “Poreklo” and Foundation “Poreklo”. Now our main goal lies ahead – securing the additional funds to build the true House of Serbian Genealogists.

Editorial Board of the Web Portal Poreklo.rs

The Editorial Board of the Portal Poreklo.rs gathers dozens of contributors who provide texts about news from genealogy, genetical genealogy, origins of families, surnames, origins of village populations, national customs, archival sources, interviews with famous persons etc.
