Serbian DNA Project represents the most important undertaking of the Society of Serbian Genealogists Poreklo. The project started in September of 2012, and today it is one of the leading national DNA projects in the world. It is based on collecting and analyzing Y-DNA testing results obtained from individuals or in scientific studies done in cooperation with academic institutions.

Serbian DNA Project achieved over 9000 individual male tests, resulting in the establishment of several hundred of Y-DNA genetical lineages. These genetic lineages help us to understand historical and prehistorical migration patterns and are of help with future research.

Serbian DNA Project website has a two-level access: the General access, and the Society of Serbian Genealogists (SSG) Poreklo (Members) access.  All visitors to the Poreklo website have public access (General) to the pages of the Serbian DNA Project.

With public access, it is only possible to see the basic demographic information of all tested individuals. This includes: family name, father’s geographic origin, patron saint on father’s side, and Y-DNA SNP mutation. One or a combination of these parameters can be used in your search of the database, resulting in location(s) placed on an interactive Google map.

In the section open only to Members of Poreklo extended search capabilities are provided, using up to six parameters.  One of the key advantages of this extended search is the use of specific SNPs. Also, with the use of various parameters it is possible to search for locations of geographic origin, as well as the information about patron saints.

Additional benefit  is provided with tools for calculating haplogroup statistics inside the database of the Serbian DNA Project. Two mainstream statistical data groupings can be reviewed: haplogroup distribution for a specific region and regional distribution for a specific haplogroup. Statistics for a specific region can be obtained by clicking on a specific region on the interactive map. You will find a number of test results, the haplogroup distribution, and a statistical comparison, to all data within the Serbian DNA Project.

If you are interested in the regional distribution of a specific haplogroup, you can do that with the use of the map. In the window, on the left side of the map, you can see the number of tested individuals for specific haplogroups and the distribution within different regions. As previously noted, data is also compared statistically to all of the Serbian DNA Project data.

On the pages of the Serbian DNA Project viewer, you can also see all of the subclades of the specific haplogroup tree. The user is also able to search the results for the specific SNP positions on a Y-tree.

Data on Serbian DNA Project about Y-DNA phylogenetic trees is organized in line with world standards of genetic genealogy.

The Serbian DNA Project is managed by the Editorial Board of the Serbian DNA Project. It currently consists of ten members headed by the Chief Editor of Serbian DNA project.

In September 2019, the Serbian DNA Project was presented publicly to the world. At the time Members of the Editorial Board of the Serbian DNA Project and the Poreklo’s Committee for Digitization participated in the international IFLA pre-conference, which was held in Belgrade. They presented the Serbian DNA Project functions through The Digital Library in The Service of Genetic Genealogy.
